If you’re imagining the over-the-top planning with champagne, fancy outfits, and a packed New Year’s Eve schedule over here… let me stop you right there. This time, I didn’t pack our schedule. Shocker.. I know!
This year, we rang in the New Year in the best way! At home, in comfy clothes, with wrapping paper taped to the ceiling and balloons wedged in between like it was the most magical setup you’ve ever seen.
And to be honest? It was perfect.
Instead of going out or trying to force a “big night,” we leaned all the way into a quiet night in. We had a special dinner that Mark so kindly cooked for us! The kids were thrilled by the decorations alone. Wrapping paper on the ceiling somehow turned our living room into a full-blown celebration. Balloons everywhere. Zero expectations. Complete excitement.
Naomi immediately decided that all of the balloons she could possibly carry were her babies. Naturally. She spent the evening “taking care” of them by shoving them under pillows, tucking them into drawers, and hiding them in various corners of the house, which felt like a… questionable parenting choice, but we chose not to intervene. Meanwhile, Link was batting balloons around the room like it was a full-contact sport, and London (our puppy) was convinced they were brand-new toys designed specifically for her to boop with her nose, chase, and occasionally steal.
No countdown pressure. No overstimulation. Just us.
As for myself, someone who goes extra for every event, it’s easy to feel like every holiday needs to be something huge, planned, over-the-top, memorable in a big way. But this night reminded me that simple often ends up being the most memorable anyway. The kids didn’t need fireworks or late nights. In fact, they watched the Dubai New Year countdown, so we could have them in bed on time. They just needed connection and laughter to have fun.
Mark and I soaked it in, knowing how fast these years are moving. One day, they won’t think wrapping paper on the ceiling is the coolest thing ever. One day, they won’t want to ring in the New Year at home with us. Sad. But for now? This is our season.
So that’s how we welcomed the New Year, surrounded by balloons, laughter, crumbs on the floor, and a whole lot of love.
Bryan style 🤍
